Cupcakes vs Cake: Which Is Better for Your Celebration?
Cake or cupcakes?
We're obviously partial to cupcakes here at Sugar Mama’s, but we're going to say something potentially controversial:
Sometimes, you should get the cake.
If you want a traditional centrepiece and a big photo moment, cake may be the better choice. If you prioritize easy serving, individual portions and a more relaxed, modern dessert, cupcakes may suit your celebration better.
So which should you choose? It really comes down to the kind of celebration you want to have.
When is cake better than cupcakes?
If you've been dreaming about a spectacular cake sitting in the middle of your celebration, get the cake.
Cakes can be beautiful centrepieces. They can be tall, tiered, intricately decorated or beautifully minimal, and they give you a large canvas for flowers, messages, toppers and other details.
There's also the moment. Cutting a wedding cake together. Blowing out birthday candles. Standing next to a beautiful cake for photographs.
Those traditions matter to some people. And if that moment is something you've pictured when imagining your wedding, birthday or celebration, cupcakes aren't necessarily a replacement for it.
When are cupcakes better than cake?
Cupcakes really shine when you want to make serving dessert easy.
There's no cake to cut, no figuring out portion sizes and no waiting while someone serves 50 slices. Each cupcake is already an individual portion.
Guests can pick one up, put it on their plate and get back to the party.
That makes cupcakes particularly useful for celebrations where guests are mingling, events with lots of other food, children's parties, office parties and anywhere you simply don't want dessert service to become another logistical headache.
They're also a great choice if you like the idea of doing things a little differently. Traditional isn't everyone's thing.
Are cupcakes easier to serve than cake?
Definitely.
Serving cake usually means you'll also need plates, forks or spoons, a cake knife and someone willing to actually cut the cake.
For a larger celebration, proper portioning can take time. At weddings, catering staff will often handle this beautifully, but it's still an additional part of the service.
Cupcakes don't really have that problem. They're already portioned. There's considerably less cutting and serving involved, and a table of cupcakes can keep moving even when everyone decides they want dessert at once.
For children, individual portions can be particularly handy too. Hand them a cupcake and they're good to go.
Will a four-year-old still find a way to get buttercream somewhere inexplicable? Almost certainly.
Are cupcakes easier to transport than cake?
Generally, yes. Cupcakes travel in boxes with each cupcake sitting securely in its own insert.
A large celebration cake is a different beast.
Tall and tiered cakes need to stay level, cool and protected during transport. Sudden braking, sharp corners and warm cars are not exactly friends of elaborate cake structures.
Cupcakes aren't indestructible either, no buttercream particularly enjoys sitting in a hot car, but individual portions packed securely into cupcake boxes are generally much less stressful to move.
So if you're collecting your own dessert and transporting it to the venue, that's something worth considering.
Which looks better: cake or cupcakes?
We're going to have to give this one to cake.
Cake is spectacular.
A beautifully designed tiered cake naturally commands attention. It's one object, usually with height, sitting exactly where everyone can see it.
Cupcakes need a little more intention to create the same visual impact, but that doesn't mean a cupcake display can't be beautiful.
Tiered stands, repeated colours, flowers, edible toppers and thoughtful styling can turn dozens of individual cupcakes into a display of their own.
The difference is really the feeling.
Cake can be grand, traditional and ceremonial. Cupcakes can feel playful, abundant, colourful and a little less expected.
And that second category is much more our thing.
Sugar Mama's isn't really about doing things simply because that's how they've always been done. We like colour. We like personality. And we like a little whimsy!
If that sounds more like your celebration, our cupcakes might fit right in.
Can I have different cupcake flavours?
Of course!
Cupcakes make it particularly easy to offer guests a visible selection of flavours, fillings and designs within one dessert display.
You can have chocolate alongside lemon. Vanilla alongside something more adventurous. You can also include individually identifiable dietary options where appropriate.
A tiered cake can absolutely contain multiple flavours too, so this isn't something only cupcakes can do. Cupcakes simply make choosing your own dessert a little easier for the guest.

What about dietary requirements?
Individual cupcakes can make it easier to include different dietary options within an order rather than adapting the entire dessert for one requirement.
At Sugar Mama's, selected flavours can be made gluten-free or vegan.
However, our kitchen does handle gluten, dairy and other allergens, and as such, we are not an allergen-free environment and cannot guarantee against cross-contamination.
If you or one of your guests has an allergy, please tell us when ordering so we can discuss what's appropriate.
Are cupcakes cheaper than cake?
Sometimes, but there's no honest universal answer.
Elaborate wedding and celebration cakes can cost thousands because you're paying for far more than flour, butter and sugar. Cake decorating is skilled, time-consuming work, and highly detailed cakes are pieces of edible art.
Cupcakes can be a more affordable alternative depending on the quantity and design.
But cupcakes are individually decorated too.
If you want 100 cupcakes with intricate handmade decorations, multiple custom colours and individual toppers, you're asking for a significant amount of skilled labour.
So we wouldn't choose cupcakes purely because you assume they'll be cheaper.
Choose them because they suit how you want your celebration to look and feel.
Can I serve cake and cupcakes together?
Absolutely! And sometimes, this is the best answer.
If you love the tradition of a cake but prefer the simplicity of serving cupcakes, you don't actually have to choose.
A smaller cutting cake or centrepiece cake can give you the candle-blowing, cake-cutting and photo moment. Then cupcakes can be served to your guests.
This can work beautifully for weddings, milestone birthdays and other larger celebrations. You get the centrepiece without needing to portion and serve a huge cake to every person in the room.
Think of it as having your cake and...
Well.
You know…
How far in advance should I order celebration cupcakes?
For custom celebration cupcakes, we recommend getting in touch 1–2 weeks in advance.
That gives us time to work through your ideas, source any custom elements and plan your order while still baking your cupcakes as close to your celebration as possible.
If your event is further away, you're welcome to contact us early and get it off your to-do list.

So, should I choose cake or cupcakes?
Ask yourself two things:
Do you want your dessert to be a major centrepiece and photo moment?
If the answer is yes, cake may be the better choice.
There's no need for us to convince you otherwise.
But...
Do you want easy serving, individual portions and doing things a little differently?
Then cupcakes might be exactly what you're looking for.
They're easy to serve, easy to share and can still be styled into a beautiful display, without someone standing behind the dessert table trying to cut 60 identical slices of cake.
And if you want both? Have both!
After all, there are very few celebrations that have been ruined by the presence of too much good dessert.
